Online social commentary (media commentary):

The IND-X, 200 (possibly their most popular steam engine), was made between 1921 and 1941 in Los Angeles, California. Having seen one at the Thresherman Antique engine and tractor show, I was motivated to fire mine up for you to see. My particular model was given to me by a toy collector who has since passed by the name of Ralph Tomlinson. He told me it was a 1931, the same year as my Model A. It comprises of a drawn copper nickel-plated boiler, mounted on a cast iron bed, which incorporates a 200W heating element mounted to the boiler. The boiler end cap accommodates a large sight glass tube and a safety valve. The engine frame is brass, with a brass cylinder and slide valve and plated steel conrods. The flywheel is Brass. The engine features a whistle, throttle, and take-off pulley. Bore is approx 3/4 inch with a 1 inch stroke, and the engine weighs just under 7 lbs. The boiler, 3" diameter x 8" long, is heated by a 120V heating element The cast alloy engine frame is mounted directly in top of the boiler, held in place by the whistle and screw type regulator valve. It has a cylindrical valve with slip-eccentric reversing. I hope you enjoy seeing it run as much as I do. Steam Engine Challenger Video Link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yluE-a...

Thanks for watching. Dave Herbert ~NightFlyyer~ AMA L-8221 CD/LM/Scientific Division.

I remember watching your original video on this many years ago, and I thought it was fantastic then, even more interesting to me now though. The whistle sure has aged gracefully though! It would be sort of a fun idea to have that little engine power a desk fan or something. Thanks for another good one!
"I've never seen one with an electric element before, I have the Mamod MM2 steam engine. It's the same scale but runs on mentholated spirit, a wood alcohol I believe.
Thanks for showing us Dave, all the best from the UK."
"Your IND-X steam engine is a real gem Nightflyer, great video of it running. I like it.
I believe that if you search images of other IND-X engines you will note that the cylinder should be at the front of the engine, opposite two prong plug at the back.
It keeps the water off the cord, these old engines have no ground plug."
What a treat to watch this. Great little machine Dave. You have the coolest things.
Wow that's a brilliant little engine so simple but it works a treat awsome
I just purchased one of these today in pretty good shape for $70.00. However after watching yours and another video I noticed I am missing the smoke stack and the throttle knob. Is there any chance you could send me measurements of these items?
Neat. Funny how it drips almost above the cord ;)
Very nice, Dave!!
Dave, I think if I remember right, several years ago Edmunds Scientific used to sell some small steam engines. I was always going to get one, but never did. That one you have is a real collectors piece I'am sure. I wish you could have seen the old Stanley Steamer my dad restored. A lots of the parts had to be refabricated because they were bad, or had come off the car. It was quite a project getting it back to it's original condition.
my dad used to run one similar to thiz for me when i was young. iv been tempted to buy a modern version with the glass viewing panel on the boiler but im not rich.
That was an awesome treat to see my Friend!!! Loved it. Thumbs up!~John
The IND-X, 200 Steam Engine was made between 1921 and 1941 in Los Angeles, California and was at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. holds pressure for awhile what psi does it run at?
It ran for a long time after you disconnected the heating element.
Very, very nice steam Engine .
I love how it just dumps water all over the electrical cord.
Very cool! Please forgive my ignorance, but could an engine like that be used for something other than entertainment?
VERY COOL!
Dave does that boiler lift off of the base? Looks like that heating element is from an old electric fry pan? To me it appears they share the same two pronged plug type?
Using Distilled Water will help prevent boiler pitting and scale. Now you need a little DC Dynamo Generator and street lamp running off off the pulley.. I also like the older Jensen Steam Engines with feed water pumps..
